MARYLAND CURES CANCER REGATTA Saturday, 15 June ...

Hi folks,

Once again, HHSA is supporting the MARYLAND CURES

CANCER REGATTA by providing a start here in Herring Bay on Saturday, 15 June 2024.

The Maryland Maryland Cures Cancer Regatta (formerly Leukemia Cup) is a CBYRA-sanctioned regatta hosted by Eastport Yacht Club, with assistance from Annapolis Yacht Club, Herrington Harbour Sailing Association, Maryland Yacht Club, and Rock Creek Racing Association.

This charity event will continue to benefit the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC). Over $45,000 was raised in 2023 to support innovative cancer research at UMGCCC. The goal this year is $75,000.

Along with participating boats, we also need an RC boat to run the start and report to the EYC Race Committee.

Please let me know ASAP if you are available to start the Race.

Everyone else, please register and help. The race info is below.

Cheers

I have emailed EYC to find out if they permit short handed sailing. I’ll post reply.

Ok. They usually will do a chess division

I am happy to do the start with Amara. However I have zero crew available, so I need at least one person to come and help me.

I figure i would leave the dock at 8:30 and would be back at the dock at 11;00.

So if I can find one person, you can count on me for the start.

Michel

Yes, EYC confirmed they permit short handed sailing, including solo. I'm racing!

Kent volunteered to come with me, so Amara is good to go. More folks are welcome to come and help, breakfast will be served!

Thank you Michel and Kent! 🏆

Mark and others on the chain,

Does anyone recall what the typical courses have been for previous regattas like this that have started in Herring Bay? As in, how long is/are the course(s) and how many times are they run?

I just tried several yachtscoring websites this morning and most just produce the eternal spinning wheel, while others return a "site can't be reached" message.

Jim

The course has been a start in Herring Bay, then two nav aids on the eastern side of the Bay, then finish at one of the first Severn River aids. The time limit is reasonable.

Thanks Peter.

I reviewed the SIs for them. They will be published soon. The start will be at 83A. The map below shows the course but without the change for the start. I was lobbying fewer starts but I’m not sure if that took.

Here are the classes.

Can't the RC change the start, such as declaring only one start? With the few boats participating that makes sense.

From what I can tell on the website, we need one more boat to get to the required three to have a Herring Bay start. Sound the alarm!!

How many boats registered so far?

Two from HHSA. Firth of Tay and Delirium. We need three for a start.

Peter,

I plan to register Blew Bayou II for the race. I just need to make sure I have crew, as some of my team will likely be traveling back from Bermuda at that time.

I will know by Wednesday night.

Jim

Even though Delirium is HHSA don't they start from Annapolis?

Delirium is starting in Annapolis to race the drop mark course in ORC.   Almost all new crew for that race (which could be interesting). Only 3 boats in that fleet at this time, but we have 7 for the Twilight Race on Saturday.

Knot Home is considering it, but won’t be able to make our go/no-go decision until next week.

So far only Firth of Tay for the Herring Bay Start, registrations are still open until Thursday evening. But it would be nice for me to know if we have the minimum of three boats by Wednesday so I would know whether to pick the RC materials up after the Ketch 22 event.

Thanks

Michel

I’m trying to get a crew together for Happy Place. Lots of regulars out of town or in Annapolis.

I’m happy to take a couple of members up for the race up and trip back.

Deck Boss

Unfortunately, neither of partners can make it, and I can’t find crew, so Knot Home is out.  Sorry to miss it.

Ahoy Maryland Cures Cancer Herring Bay Fleet Competitors

Sailing instructions are out and attached here.

According to the scratch sheet all four of you are racing PHRF Non Spinnaker so there will be only one start, using Pennant "2" as a class flag. Note that the SIs have us meet in the vicinity of A, but the start is from 83A. So Amara will go directly to 83A. I plan on being all set by 9:30

Also note that the channel for communications is 71.

Wind looks good, should be a fun race.

See you tomorrow,

Michel
